This week, I have joined thousands of authors from all over the world in signing an open letter pledging not to work with Israeli institutions due to the genocide in Gaza, attacks on the West Bank and now Lebanon. It is a small but significant action, with conscious reference to the cultural boycotts that were so effective against Apartheid South Africa. A reminder that as writers we can have a meaningful impact on our culture, and therefore we have a responsibility to work for justice. As the letter states:

“Culture has played an integral role in normalizing these injustices… We have a role to play.”

Coming up in November is the ASA’s annual keynote and awards ceremony, held on Gadigal land this year. Very much looking forward to James Bradley’s keynote – his latest book, Deep Water, is an absolute wonder. I am also excited for the announcement of the Barbara Jefferis Award. I was one of the judges this year and I’m so proud of this incredible shortlist.

And in happy news of my own, I’ve just been shortlisted for an SA Literary Fellowship! This is only the second year these fellowships have been offered and they’re such an essential addition to the available support for writers in this state, thanks to Writers SA and the State Library of South Australia. The lucky recipients will be announced next week.
